My latest Substack is up- i post at the new and full moons each month—this one is a brief update about my relocation to Orkney, plus a poll for paid subscribers! 🔗in 🐝🧿Ooooo. 🌛🌝🌜🌿🕯️🌚🌷Equinox blessings, my friends. Ostara’s New Pink Moon tomorrow- (Mabon to my friends in the Southern Hemisphere). The North American edition of #ashesandstones will be published by @pegasus_books on 3rd of October, 2023. Available to preorder now. Happy International Women’s Day. I can’t believe it’s been a year since the trade announcement. The book is finding so many passionate readers. I love knowing that together we are remembering our ancestors with compassion and dignity. Thank you @sceptrebooks @northlitagency for helping to bring the book into the world. ✨🎇💜 EDIT- thank you to @sereneconneeley for recommending this book to me. I loved this middle grade novel by @ellemcnicollofficial about a neurodivergent girl who campaigns for a memorial to those persecuted as witches in her village outside of Edinburgh. The main character, Addie, is autistic and her challenges to be understood and taken seriously are central to the narrative. Her bullying at the hands of teachers and students parallels the lives of the accused, and Addie makes this link in profoundly moving ways. She persists relentlessly for her vision to be taken seriously—I could relate to her deeply. It’s a fine example of radical grassroots mettle and the difference that can make in people’s lives. While writing Ashes & Stones I was deeply troubled by the dehumanisting stories we tell children about the victims of the witch hunts. I wondered how we can talk to children about this disturbing history. This book is proof that can be done with depth and sensitivity. #bookstagram #middlegradebooks #middlegradebooks My latest is about rootlessness-meditation on gentrification, displacement and longing. 🔗in 🐝🧿0️⃣EDIT- this is up at my substack newsletter. You can subscribe here-https://allysonshaw.substack.com/ (this post is for my paid subscribers, but there is also a fee tier) My visit to Hoy yesterday- and the grave of Betty Corrigall. Her tragic suicide and perpetually disrupted grave is a tourist attraction. I’ve written about her story in the past and hope to do so again with more clarity at some point. This shieling near Rackwick is open to hikers- with its ghostly bone collection and ethereal origami It’s an inviting place of stories on a long summer night beside the roaring sea cliffs. 🎧🌚🪱🙈📖A new micro podcast is up on my substack celebrating the new worm moon 🌚 & contemplating *selling out.* link in 🐝🧿0h #ashesandstones Lupercalia Book Tour in Edinburgh!
